Visit Mark Twain’s Boyhood Home and Museum, or the Big River Train Town Model Train Museum. Hometown of Samuel Clemens (‘Mark Twain’), this quirky river town has been a popular riverboat port for many years. Spend a day wandering through the scenic streets of Burlington, visiting the local cultural centers and museums. A variety of shore excursions is offered at this port, including the Quad City Botanical Center. Quad Cities is made of 5 neighboring towns and offers Civil War history as well as a blend of communities. This ‘All-American City’ has been home to many waves of immigrants, especially Irish and German, creating a thriving downtown and unique Historic Districts. Iowa’s oldest city, and one of the oldest settlements on the west side of the Mississippi River, French-Canadian fur trader Julien Dubuque arrived in the area in 1785. Today, the architecture, statues and views of the river make it an artist’s dream. This city on the river was originally built for the lumber industry, but found new life in beer. Winona is a stunning, 'Island City,' built upon a large sand bar sitting beneath the limestone river bluffs of the Mississippi! Board the American Queen this morning before our 5pm departure.
